Tonight saw a stunning run from Julian Matthews, setting a new Waterfront 5km record of 14min 38sec. His time takes 3sec off the record set by Hamish Carson last year. Julian represented NZ in the 1500m at this year's Commonwealth Games, along side Nick Willis. Many will recall the great battle between Hamish and Julian in the NZ 1500m championships in Wellington in March, where Hamish just edged Julian for the title. With Julian now living and training in Wellington, we could see some awesome head-to-head races between Hamish and Julian this summer - perhaps in a Waterfront 5km soon?!
Ayesha Shafi was our fastest female tonight, in a time of 19min 13sec. And Fraser Samson had another good walk and win, in a time of 30.54.
Weather conditions were reasonable, although the southerly wind was certainly noticeable and cold in places. A total of 67 keen runners and walkers, including a number of juniors from the Trentham club, avoided the distraction of the Melbourne Cup to test their form and fitness.
Thanks to the team from Wellington Scottish Athletics Club for the excellent officiating. And a big thanks to our sponsors - Pak n Save Kilbirnie, Lifestyle Sports for the weekly gift voucher, Chicago Sports Cafe for the free drink afterwards and bar tabs as spot prizes, and Phil Proctor - the best massage therapist for runners there is!
Please note that next week 11 November Chicago Bar is unavailable for us to use as it is under going refurbishment. We still plan to hold a 5km race for anyone that is keen. We will do registration outside in front of Chicago, but there will be no free beer afterwards and no prizegiving (we will still post results as normal). There will be no entry fee, so if you already have your timing tag, just turn up on the start line and go (no need to come to registration desk).
If you spot any errors with our results, please email Todd.
