A good field of 115 runners turned out for the Waterfront 5k on 12 February on a day where the weather looked decidedly dodgy. The wind was up from the north and before the start there were occasional showers. This made things very humid and not the most conducive conditions for racing. On the upside however, it meant the foot traffic wasn't as bad as it has been recently.
Todd Stevens made it three in a row and kept up his consistent form with a time of 16:54 but it was a close race with gaps of four seconds to Cathal Reilly (16:58) and Michiel Kallenberg (17:02). The fastest women came from the early start this evening with Kate Grinlington completing the distance in 21:49. Rosi Zeise with 22:22 and Sarah Engelbrett (22:44) were the next two fastest. Fraser Samson with 33:34 was the fastest of the walkers home and Jacqueline Wilson with 33:50 led the women home.
Thanks to the Olympic Harriers team of Paula, Rebecca, Mike, Ele, Andrea, Rob, Graeme, Murray and Mark for officiating.
Best wishes to everyone competing in the AMI Round the Bays this Sunday. We trust the Waterfront 5km Series has assisted you in your preparation.
Be sure to turn up next Tuesday: our first participation competition finishes next week. If you have done at least 2 races so far this year, turn up next week and be in the draw for some great prizes, sponsored by Icebreaker. The draw will be for everyone who takes part in at least 3 of the 7 races from 8 Jan to 19 Feb. Then we have a second competition for those who take part in 3 of the 6 races from 26 Feb to 2 Apr.
Thanks also to our long standing sponsors - in particular Lifestyle Sports for the weekly gift voucher and Chicago Sports Cafe for the free drink afterwards and bar tabs as spot prizes. Lifestyle has a very extensive range of running shoes. If you can't get to the shop in Tawa, send Manager Karen an email (rolysmith2@hotmail.com). She would be more than happy to answer your questions or source a pair of your favourite shoes.
If you are looking for another challenge after Round the Bays, check out the Hutt Valley Harriers Hutt News Fun Run & Walk. http://www.huttnewsfunrun.co.nz/. In brief it is run as a fun event on Sunday the 10th of March where both walkers and runners are welcome to try the 5km or 10km course. It is mostly off road on the river trail on both sides of the Hutt River. There are some good spot prizes from sponsors, with the main sponsors being the Hutt News who provide a $500 travel voucher, and shoe other prizes from the Shoe Clinic. The Hutt Club has managed to arrange perfect weather for as many years as I can remember and trust it will be the same again this year!
